The Sunscreen Song - 10 Year Tribute (Everybody_s Free)

65 174 views | 8 Jul. 2010

Lyrics from the

Lyrics from the song:

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '99

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be

it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by

scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable

than my own meandering

experience...I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not

understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.

But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at photos of yourself and

recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before

you and how fabulous you really looked....You're not as fat as you

imagine. Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as

effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing

bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that

never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm

on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing everyday that scares you Sing Don't be reckless with other people's hearts, don't put up with

people who are reckless with yours. Floss Don't waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you're ahead, sometimes

you're behind...the race is long, and in the end, it's only with

yourself. Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you

succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your

life...the most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they

wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year

olds I know still don't. Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you'll miss them when they're gone. Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't, maybe you'll have children, maybe

you won't, maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky

chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary...what ever you do, don't

congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either -- your

choices are half chance, so are everybody else's. Enjoy your body,

use it every way you can...don't be afraid of it, or what other people

think of it, it's the greatest instrument you'll ever

own.. Dance...even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don't follow them. Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents, you never know when they'll be gone for

good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the

people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you

should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and

lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you

knew when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live

in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel. Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will

philander, you too will get old, and when you do you'll fantasize

that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were

noble and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,

maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one

might run out. Don't mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will

look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who

supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of

fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the

ugly parts and recycling it for more than

it's worth. But trust me on the sunscreen...

Most of the video was filmed in 2008, and yeah, it's all Ki'une from http://www.pickupdance.com , http://www.risingbean.com. He made this video compiled from clips of his adventures and activities over the past while. It's been 10 years since this song was released, and he never really got sick of it, and wanted to share how he lived it out. I'm not trying to tell everyone to do everything possible, but rather inspire people to live more freely - and that you can start today by doing something simple, such as dancing in your living room!

Song The Sunscreen Song is written (lyrics) by Mary Schmich and voiced by Baz Luhrmann. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wear_Sunscreen

this may sound a little silly, but this song actually made me cry!, i think it relates to us all, and when he said, ''get to know your parents, you'll never know when they'll be gone for good'', that got me going aswell, as my dad is gone, its also the background music

Roadie Ric

Well done, Axel. The editing of this moving montage was brilliantly synched to the profoundly inspirational message contained in Baz Luhrman's fine rendition of a deeply insightful essay by Ms. Mary Schmich, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist from my hometown of Chicago. Kudos.

No it's not silly. I hated this song back in 99 but today I heard it on the radio and I cried! It didn't mean anything to me back at age 28.

dcashappraiser

"The race is long...and in the end it's only with yourself", how true.

Metallee123

"The race is long, and it's only with yourself." Too true. There are so many people who compare themselves to others who may have "gotten ahead in life" and they berate themselves because of it. It's a shame that this inferiority complex has lead to some people taking their own lives because of this sense of pressure of "being ahead of others", or people feel they don't "belong", when really, everyone has their place in this world.

I did too... I have watched this one and the other original vid several times since my husband showed it to me... It's so to the point, simple and just the right amount of advice with humor added. :) It makes me happy... nostalgia a powerful thing, huh?

Whitney DeLong

It didnt mean anything to me when I was 18... I'm now 24 and I cried when I heard it on the radio for the first time since I graduated. Everything in this speech is so true and I think that when I am 32 this song will have even more meaning to me. I have been listening to it all day long.

Michael A.

Great job and thank you so much for making and sharing this! I believe Baz Luhrmann would be honored by your 10 year tribute.

Dear Internet,
About 6months ago I started a new job. I left behind a very difficult job, but I loved dearly the people I worked with. Yesterday was a high point, I experienced the joys of my new job, new friends, and new achievements. Tonight, by coincidence I meet up with friends from my old job that I have not seen for many months. I love them both dearly. This morning this song came on the radio. I would like to, and will try to see my old friends again, but fear I won't. And I know things can never go back to how they were before. So, dear Internet and dear world. Thank you for giving me such amazing people to have share my days with I do miss you so much, and love you still. Yet, I know that life moves on and we all must follow our own paths. Stay safe, and hope our paths cross again some time. XXX.

How is Rihanna on the cover of a magazine for a music video for a song that came out in 1999??? This must be a new video for the song. Rihanna didn't come out till 2005 at 17 years old with Pon De Replay. And yet that magazine cover shows her with red hair from the 2010 to 2012 era of Rihanna. And yet I recognise other parts of this film clip from the original... Anyone else notice this?
