What's that Ingredient?: Silicone (Part 1)

915 views | 6 Apr. 2010

Blog post about

Blog post about silicones:

Part 2:

Silicone info on 'Skin Deep':

*My blog will always have the 'ingredient' information before the video is posted on youtube!

Wanna ask me a question?

@kewlchick72: Thanks! :D Ahh I know. My fluoride has propylene glycol in it and I haven't used it in awhile because of that :S

@kewlchick72: If you go to CVS or another drugstore, mainstream shampoos are all they will have, meaning sulfate shampoos. If you look online or for a natural food store, like whole foods, they have tons of sulfate-free shampoos there. Some are expensive, but I use the brand 365 and it is $3.95 I believe :)

@comedainxlover: The few hair products that I have checked, shampoos and conditioners, do not have silicones in them.

Omg so I turned around and grabbed my tresemme heat tamer spray dimethicone is the 4th ingredient. Your videos sparks my interest in researching ingredients. I watch a lot of youtube videos but not that many that teach me something or make me think like yours do. Keep doing your videos they are awesome!

@kewlchick72: It is hard sometimes to shop for things online :( What hair type do you have??

@kewlchick72: I have oily roots and dry ends, so I know what you mean ;P I've never ordered from lucky vitamin, but I love their discounts and such :)

@kewlchick72: Natural all the way ;P

@kewlchick72: That's good :) But they still have sulfates :(

@kuchi109: In this video I was 17. I'm 18 now.

chyna rose

This video is SO informative! Thank you so much for sharing!!

Jake Powell

You're really really strange. I have been using sulfate shampoos and silicone things for years. I'm still alive. But I like your videos.

@loserly2711: I just poured some in my hand, and put it on the ends!

Taylor Petrosky

where do silicones come from?

@actor407: I'm not saying sulfates and silicones will kill you... It's just a matter of what you want to put into your body; chemicals, or not.

Kate Grate

These videos are exactly what I needed. I'm in the process of educating myself on the bad ingredients to stay away from and then teaching my Mom everything I learn. I find myself coming to your videos again and again to learn more. Thank you for everything you're doing! :)

@loserly2711: I have acne discoloration, but olive oil worked WONDERS for getting rid of them :)

@kewlchick72: That's awesome! Shipping always kills me, too. LOL. I'm going to check the site out again ;P

Have you had Botox? Just one complaint--skin does not breathe... :-)

Jane M.

Great video. CeraVe cleansers do not have silicones. Recommended by dermatologists. I love it.

Angelina Carraway35

In Dec I wish someone would do a series called 25 Days of/till Christmas n each day do a makeup n an outfit look!!!

Rena Dempsey

Ummmm....I think this is my favourite video yet! I could not agree more. Silicones are so bad for skin and found in so many products. Good clean skin care and treatments are the keys to fabulous healthy skin. My regime is simple because i invest in treatments. I save money. I don't need primers. Like please! It's all one big sell. And btw, LOVE the Ren Perfect Canvas. Thank you so much for posting this educational and informative video. Truly. xx

This was definitely very informative! I had discovered a long time ago that my skin didn’t like primers with silicone but I never thought my skin care would have any. I will definitely start to transitioning into a silicone free zone!! Thanks!!

Miss Jameela Chen

I’m an ingredient fiend and I also eschew silicones as much as possible, especially in skin care. I was really hoping you were going to include some silicone free makeup recommendations in your video. Do you have any? Do you think you could do a video on that? Yes I know it is very very challenging to find good silicone free makeup! :) One silicone free skin product I’ve been happy with is Elta MD UV clear SPF 46. Also there’s a line of skin care selling on amazon called Kate Ryan and they have some really great skin care products that are silicone free and pretty reasonably priced. I have only tried a handful of their line, but they seem to use really clean and beneficial ingredients in general, and I had no real complaints with what I tried (two vitamin C serums, retinol, moisturizer). Also I recently tried the Juice beauty stem CC cream. The ingredient deck is fabulous. But it has pretty much no coverage. It is otherwise a really fantastic blend of skin care, high zinc SPF, and super sheer color for those wanting that. It would have been a HG if it only had more coverage. I am using as a last step of skin care though. I dont like the IT CC cream because although it does have good coverage, it also has silicone. Btw, my skin type is combo oily T and dry cheeks, prone to acne, and I’m in my early 40’s. This comment was a bit scattered but just had the impulse to share a few silicone free things I’ve tried in the last few months! Lots of love back to you!

Isaac Delacruz

What are your thought on Paula’s choice ?? Most of Her products have silicone I was going to place an order but now am debating if I should

Sheri Lynn

I can't ignore the resemblence to Genie Francis at the height of the Luke and Laura days!

Susan Ladd

Thank you♥️ we need to know these things.

Nancy Ciampa

great video...thank you

Erika Approved

You stated Silicones are occlusive, but in the beginning when you were talking about proponents of silicone, you stated there were breathable silicones that were not occlusive - what are those? How can we keep a look out for those particular silicones?

Nina K

Thank you! I asked you for this and you did it ?. I may not be able to get silicones completely out of my skincare makeup but I'm going to try & reduce its use. Xoxo!

Donj a know

OMG! This was an awesome video! You rock as both an amazing make up artist and teacher! Thanks! Hoping that some of my less expensive brands might be silicone free, like Pixi or Aveeno or Timeless? One can dream!

Tony Frescko

Silicone makes my skin red. No thank you.

Denise McDowell

Another great informative video. ??

Suzy V

Hi I have done a lot of investigating into silicone free products including makeup and suncare. Please look in to the below. I found 3 spf products silicone free and are really good. One is 100percentpure.com and pratima skincare has one of the best suncare creams. And lastly a Canadian company called cyberderm. Check them out their spf 30 is amazing and silicone free . Check out this list of top spf with no silicones https://beautyeditor.ca/2017/06/19/zinc-sunscreen-for-face . Also forgot to include deciem the parent company to niod, the ordinary and hylamide.

Amber Burnett

I’m a new subbie and I’m so happy I found you. I’m in my 40s and I’ve neglected my skin care routine for a while. So I basically binge watched your channel and gathered information for my dry aging skin. I really appreciate the range of price points and I’ve purchased a few of The Ordinary products which I had never heard of until you, but so glad to have found. Anyway, needless to say, my skincare is about to improve dramatically thanks to you! Oh and the double cleanse surely will be a huge game changer for me. Wish I knew this before!

I’m trying to calm my Rosacea so this info is so helpful!!! Please continue this topic with foundation & makeup. Thank you?

I don't mind when silicone is added in small amounts to cosmetics but when the first 5 to 7 ingredients listed is a silicone derivative & then the "good " ingredients are listed last & you're paying big bucks for high end eye cream or serum, it makes you more than a little disappointed.

For me personally, too much silicone is a major contributor of milia. I avoid it for that reason mostly. Bums me out because I love how silicone based primers make my skin look.

I worked at a Bentonite plant in Wyoming when I was 19 and breathing that crap you do not want to do but it produces silica.. silicone and dimethicone are in all of the personal lubricants for women.. I also watch acrylic pours and when I saw the title I thought I was clicking on a art video LOL but great info thanks for sharing..

adalyn tello

LOVE, LOVE your makeup look in this video! ;)

Thank You, Elle.  I am looking to eliminate the toxins from my house and beauty products.  I wonder if you would be interested in learning more about healthier make up, also.  I got on an app "Think Dirty". They give a rating for toxicity. Not certain how accurate they are. We could all benefit from less harmful chemicals in our system.

So silica is still bad (dumb question ik)

Tina Williams

I really want to watch your videos but I can't stop counting how many times you say UM. it drives me crazy. Sorry

Amanda Barrientos

Hi !!! So glad you posted this!! Thank you! ?I wanted to share my list of silicone names and also share Pure Anada has awesome products and Burt's Bees has come out with a natural makeup line and also E.L.F has a lock on primer that doesn't have silicone.

Elle thank you so much for all the hard work that you have done thank you so much awesome advice

Nina Davidsen Müller

Thank you so much for this Elle - it’s so helpful, and I’m horrified to see how many of my products have silicones in them. I just wanted to mention that the BalanceMe skincare line is silicone free - even their eye cream ! Not sure if you have that brand in the US :)

Susan Anderson

Your make up is stunning! Thank you for all the information on silicones. Have you found that silicone is in sunscreen? Thank you for sharing products that do or do not have silicone. The video is very informative.

Master Sensei Zach

I love your makeup and your skin is glowing

Kaisha Lee

So educational. I have to return a few items now :) Thank you

Sheri Silvestri

Elle!! Thank you for the video on silicones, my skin's #1 enemy! :) I checked some of the product recommendations to see if they would work for me and found Polymethylsilsesquioxane in the IT micellar product...it's a silicone!! Any ingredient with the suffix -ane is a silicone derivative too. Much love and thanks again, I always look forward to your uploads!!

Rachel Ross

I don't see the list of the cosmetics you are wearing in this video.

Palladio 1500

Hmmm....Wonder why dermatologists say that silicone in general is harmless and is frequently used as a preservative. There are always people who will be sensitive to any ingredient that doesnt mean it is is always harmful!

Cheryl Bolinger

Have you already created or will you create a video using Vapour products?

selenia carrico

Great video why use something that will keep junk trapped into your pores. I follow what you teach it’s because of you I am even on a skincare routine. Got a question though what can I use on my 15 year old teenage son that has extreme dry skin with eczema he has very little acne but his skin feels like an alligator what do you recommend for his mild acne and for his face I would really appreciate it thanks so much! ?

I love all your videos specially the skin care. Appreciate you educating us.

Julia Karanović

Does anyone know a good hydrating face mask (no sheet masks) without silicones? ?

Carol Lamberson

Oh my goodness. I am in the fight of my life right now over a silicon smelter coming into our town. 200 meters from my backyard. They say it's "a green product" blah blah blah. I'm in a group called CANSS, community against Newport silicon smelter, on facebook. NE Wa State corner on the stateline of Northen Idaho. Thank you for addressing this!!!!!

Pamela Corral

Becca velvet blurring primer replaced my silicone based primer it has dimethicone but it is water based so my skin handles it ok. For anyone looking to blur pores.

Meredith Walsh

Not sure if anyone else mentioned it but the Skindinavia Primer doesn't have any silicones in it. I just received it as a sample with the finishing spray (which does have silicone...).

Ann Agresta

Oh no, Tacha water cream!!! NO!!! I love that. But I did use a sample of the Youth to the People Spinach Kale moisturizer. I bought the full size of the cleanser and love love love it. I will get the full size moisturizer! Yahoooo!

What’s a good replacement for Tatcha dewy luminous mist? Just checked - it has silicone ? Awesome video! ???❤️

Jennifer Smith

Thank you so much for the great information. I have been using Aveeno daily moisturizer for a few years now and always loved it, especially under makeup. I just looked up the ingredients and sure enough it has dimethicone in it. I will now be looking for one free of this chemical.

Kay Stary

It's definitely too oclussive for some of us. Many times there are so unecessary!

Cyndi Ficker

Thank you for this very informative video. I never really realized that silicone could be that bad for your skin, and it all makes sense to me. I'm going to be turning 32 in a couple of months, and up until recently (over the past year or so) I've been becoming more and more aware and conscience about taking care of my skin and body. It's been slow, and I've realized that there is some damage that I've done to my skin and body that I think is beyond a cream, oil, or anything. I also think people, like myself mistake acne scars as enlarged pores, and so they treat as such, I've honestly come to the realization that some of the craters on my face are acne scars, so I will try to treat those separately. Do you have any advice for acne scars? Also could you do a skin care routine for people in their 30's? I see more videos of skin care for 20's and 40's+, but not a lot for 30's. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Adriane M

It’s so hard to get dimethicone free items especially affordable items at the drug store

WillaRose Soaps

Elle Leary Artistry I couldn’t believe the abundance of silicone’s in the Water Cream by Tatcha! They’re a relatively clean brand. I’ve been using the Silk Cream and Essence for a couple of months now, and it’s reflected in my skin. I stocked up on both items during the rouge sale. I also purchased the It Cosmetics Micellar 3 in 1 Glow Tonic, The serum/Primer from Ren, The Cleansing Balm by Farmacy, a few items from Peter Thomas Roth, Dr. Gross’s Peel Pads. and a few other items. I’ve managed to remove silicone’s from my skincare, but makeup is infinitely more challenging.

For an eye cream check into Farmacy Eye Dew Total eye cream. I didn't see any silicones in the ingredient list. Also the Shaba Complex eye serum from Drunk Elephant.

Tinisha Tallman

What is your nail and lip color please? Soo pretty.

Michelle Rodeno

I've been interested in alcohol/alcohol denat in products. Any thoughts or advise?

Aria Cates

i use silicon based primera everyday, i use my clarisonic brush morning and night to keep it clean. my skin, which is very acne prone, is completely fine it is all self care just take care of your skin and you can use whatever you want.

No silicones for my oily, acne prone skin. They cause me to have horrible breakouts. Love that you made this video.

Your skin is absolutely radiant!! I am starting to focus more on ingredients as I have always been more forgiving when it comes to makeup. Now that there are so many lines creating cosmetically elegant formulas that are better for the skin, and free of harmful ingredients, I am so hopeful. The REN primer will be mine!

Mariela Laureano

Can you write down the primers that you recommend ? Please

Jane Burke

Really interesting Elle.I have to admit I have worn them for the look of pores & texture but only now I’m starting to check the ingredients out.I also think the heavy makeup and heavy powder is something I have already started doing without but I would love to see a few videos on things that look good on texture & lines.Iwant to be able to cover with a light layer of whether it be a B.B./ cc/ tinted moisturiser but use a good pin pointed concealer on spots, marks etc.I just loved it when you said pack it in lol I love that think about us ??????

Malene Rose Foldager

REN have a very good eyecreme I think. And also jurlique

Hugo Raleigh

I watch your channel and use skin care a lot- it’s not a big deal and I’m not “offended” at all, but instead of referring to all the users of these products as “ladies” using a more inclusive non gender specific word, may in my opinion, make everyone feel even more inclined to comment and get involved- hence growing your awesome channel.

Love the content and how thorough and well spoken you are! Have a good one!

MD in MD

Hi Elle - watching in 2019. Thanks so much for this video. I leaned recently that my beloved shiseido benefiance eye cream contained silicone. I would apply it every night thinking to myself "wow, this really works, my undereye is so smooth and moisturized". But after washing it off in the morning, all the effects were gone and my skin was dry and dull. Yup, one of the first ingredients was dimethicone. I was duped for two years. I've moved on to better skin care and left a review for that product on Sephora so others would be informed.

Deb Dag

Thank you for the clear commentary on why not to silicone, so informative.  I agree that silicone can exacerbate so many skin issues.  You talked about not being able to find an eye product with out silicone.  Yet, you mentioned REN.  They do have several (3) eye products.  I've been using them for years.  They work and like all REN product zero silicone.

Master Sensei Zach

How did you do your makeup and what did you use?

Malu Santos

Elle, the standards in Europe are much higher at all levels than USA. Cosmetics, food, vehicle design, etc. Sorry to tell you! Thank you for the subject in this video. ??.

Rachel Blackwell

Hi Elle. I’m a beauty therapist and have worked in the British spa industry for many years. I love to hear what people have to say about skincare and skincare ingredients on YouTube but there are so many people that consider themselves an expert now, that I’m often dubious when I start watching them to be honest, but I have to hand it to you. I agree with everything you said and I like that you articulated why exactly silicone is not beneficial. I find that people like to have things explained well so they can visualize the point of view. Imagine all those little plugs of ‘plastic’ clogging the pores to keep the moisture in! Eww! ? I’m so glad to have found your channel - I’ll definitely be recommending you to my peers and my clients.

Katarzyna Woźniczko

I recommend 100% Pure Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream. It's natural, doesn't contain any harmful ingredients and performs really well. Great video! ?

Sumer Tatum-Clem

Thank you so much for this! Super informative and helpful, solidified my somewhat innate sense that silicone was a bad ingredient.

Great topic! I find silicones very clogging and difficult to remove without a double cleans. Interesting you mention that skin breaths? As I understand it, it’s a misnomer that skin actually breaths. It seems pore clogging and skin breathing is used interchangeably. What are your thoughts?

Theresa Pfeiffer

Thank you so much Elle!! You really are the best? I've learned so much about skincare that for the first time in over 10 years my face looks great....all thanks to just listening to you????? Stephanie Lang just posted about beauty Guru's and well check it out, I agree and I see you as much more as well. If it's okay with you I'm going to mention you on her channel. You teach us so much, yes you're beautiful, yes you do make-up, but you teach us everything that we need to know to do it ourselves and how to really and truly take care of our skin. I thank you with all of my heart for teaching me so much!!?? As I said my skin is so much better but not just mine but also my 3 teenagers skin are all looking better all thanks to your teachings. I love you and I will always be a HUGE fan. When my 13, 15, and 19 year olds are all watching your videos with me .....you must be amazing. My kids also feel so much better now that their skin is starting to clear up. You're the best!!!!

Lydia Glassman

Love this topic! You are gorgeous today! Could you list your products, or even better, show us what you did to get this look! Thank you! Wish you a wonderful day and THANK YOU for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us!!! (-:

Norunn Ladstein

It sounds like dimethicone and Silicones are just as bad as mineral oil...those ingredients may be cheap, but water and glycerin are also cheap, and most moisturisers contains 70% water!! (and you always find water & glycerin first in the ingredients list....and that`s why I find the price-tag on a lot of creams & lotions doesn’t make sense.) Dimethicone works well on my dry skin though! However, I avoid mineral oil.

Sarah Sarwar

The Tatcha silk cream does have silicone in it. Cyclopentasiloxane is a form of silicone and it's literally the fourth ingredient in the ingredient list of the product. You should've known this if you did your research properly about silicones. Please edit it out from the list as people might buy it thinking it's silicone free.

Margret N

Morning.... so informative. Thank you much. What are your thoughts on Castro oil for under eyes , etc. ? Have a great week. ???

Rasha Sarandah

Would love to know your skincare musthaves for a 32 year old old female concerned with anti aging and prone to blemishes.

Beverly Cole

Food for thought. Thanks Elle

Diana Leon

Thank you Elle!!!

Sharon Lan

I’m allergic to silicone, it’s hard to find makeup or skincare that doesn’t have silicone :(

Tonya Goncalves

Hi Elle! Thanks so much for this informative video! And thank you for sharing the products that don't have silicon. ???love your makeup!!

polo polo

My skin toner has isopropyl alcohol and phenoxyethanol in it.. So is ths safe for skin.??

Virginia Holliday

Again I have to thank you for this video. Wayne Goss has said if you use a silicone primer, use a silicone foundation. Nothing about it being harmful. So the information you provided is something I needed to know. Thank you so much. No more silicone for me!

Maria Fusco

Not on topic, but I tried the UD 24/7 pencils and I loved them. Thanks for your tips in using them.

virginia villalobos

Great video, Elle.  I never understood what the deal with silicone was until your explanation, so thanks for your research.

Thanks so much! I had no idea about all of this. You've given me something to research. Thank you!

Ivonne Hansson

Have you tried any of the Is Clinical products? I think they might be without silicon in it.

Sue Cone

Thank you so much!! I am having breakouts which after a blood test has been blamed on hormones but now I am also going to look up the ingredient list on my skin care & Makeup. Thanks so much for this information. I always look forward to your skincare Sunday as I always learn something.???

Vannah Louisiana

I heard the negatives about dimethocone causing breakouts around 15 years ago and since I already have oily/ combo skin I never like things with it. Definitely agree it's an irritant, especially when used regularly.

Donna Effinger

Great information. Trying to transition to more natural products.

Daniela S

Hi Elle! I had to search for a video that you did on the silicones. I’m very disappointed that I bought dr Denese and her first ingredient is dimethicone. Since I bought this stuff from QVC it’s going straight back. I read that dimethicone causes uterine cancer. So sad. I want clean beauty. Maybe I need to research more. ?

S _

I agree, it's just bad for you ?

Lisa Cicone

Thank you for this, I know it took a lot of time to acquire all the necessary information.

A.J. Steinbring

Any drugstore products that are silicone free that you could recommend?

Tracy M

Great information Elle! Did I hear you say you use sunflower oil as an eye cream? I use it at night ? do you suggest using it in the am routine as well?

Jenni Schipper

What do you think about silicone and a tinted moisturizer?

Pamela Corral

I have found a lot of my skincare had silicone as a main ingredient after going through heck getting rid of the tiny white bumps I got after using a new foundation that was dimethicone based. Since I stopped using them my skin has never been better. Now I only use skincare without and makeup it has to be atleast on the middle of ingredient list. Some of the most coveted serums are dimethicone based I dont get it...first ingredient! Thanks for the video a lot of people do not understand it.

Elle, loved this video, so informative. Could you do one on the best drugstore non-silicone products. Namely primer, foundation, concealer, setting spray. I have combination non sensitive skin. Thanks

Tracy Lea Beauty

Hi Elle! I love skin care Sunday!!!!??? Tracy

Ok went down the rabbit hole and really checked the ingredients. Many have dimethicone as top ingredient ! ?? I do love the Ren calming lotion so I will try their other products too as well as Youthto the people products

What is your favorite illuminating primer that isn't silicone heavy??

D Cotton

If I rub into my breast will I get silicon breasts? Joking, thank you for this I will now re-read all labels.

Wow Elle thank you so much! I'm so glad the REN products are good. I've tried a few items in this line and really love it! You make something so complicated easy to understand! I'll be checking my ingredients on what I've been using and see what needs to be replaced. Ordinary is one I'll check I don't use many products from them but they get so much exposure because of price. I have 3 grown daughters and I'm so excited to share this video with them ! Thanks again!

Hi! Are there any foundations without silicone? Is very hard to find..

Just when I thought I had a good path going with my skin care and make up . Kind of a little upset because you read the labeling on make up and they describe themselves as non-comedogenic . Does that not mean that it does not cause comedones? So I just looked up my beloved Laura Mercier loose translucent setting powder and down deep in the ingredient list is methicone! So now I guess the search is on probably starting with juice beauty . You realize now you have to start a whole series or at least mention silicone(derivative) free alternatives to this that and the other to help us out right?

Please do a silicone-free makeup video! Also, I’m so disappointed that all of the Paula’s choice SPFs contain silicone.
