Retinoids/Retinol for Beginners: What it does, common strengths and types

3 893 views | 22 Mar. 2020

DISCLAIMER: I am not a

DISCLAIMER: I am not a scientist or expert; this is what I’ve learnt and experienced after two decades of skincare obsession, so please take what I say with a pinch of salt and consult your doctor if needed.

#Retinoid (sometimes known simply as #retinol) is a confusing word for most. It refers to Vit A, which we break down into Retinoic Acid, which is necessary to skin functions.

Retinoic Acid (#Tretinoin) has been studied for decades and besides being used to treat #acne, it has been scientifically proven to delay or even reverse signs of aging at the correct doses. This compound can smooth skin texture, tighten pores, rebuild collagen, reduce wrinkles, inhibit hyperpigmentation and even treat bumpy or pitted scars.

Curious yet?

There is too much to cover so in this vid I’ll summarize some basic concepts I’ve learnt about Retinoid products for beginners who may be overwhelmed by the amount of information and sheer number of products out there.

00:47 Overview

01:57 What is Retinoic Acid?

04:39 Important tips before starting

06:12 Pregnancy and Nursing Mothers

07:44 Four common types of Retinoid Products: Tretinoin vs Retinaldehyde vs Retinols vs Retinyls (Esters)

12:21 Vitamin C and Retinoids

16:03 Retinoids around the eyes

19:26 Retinoid Alternatives; Adapalene, Bakuchiol, HPR / Granactive Retinoid

20:26 Retinoid Product List (Some stuff I like; please comment and share your faves!)

Babe. 38 ?!?! U look 25!!! Great informative video and thanks for the IG chat on the same topic other day. Definitely looking at the ones u tipped about :)

Zuzana Kolnikova

Hi Candice, how are you doing? Here in Italy things are bad, thanks Lord my family and I are healthy and safe, but I hope to get over it as soon as possible.
In the meantime I watch everything I can't see while I'm working, TV series, films and you :)
I really liked your video, I'm using Elisabeth Arden capsules right now so I feel ready to switch to something stronger!
Last thing, if I may: I'm 40, and always been thinking there is like 10 years difference between us, quite surprised about your age. You look like I doll, always.
Complimenti! Baci dall'Italia ?

Very informative..thanks ..just starting to use retinol from the inkey list...let's see how it works.

Hi folks, finally got the retinoid/retinol video edited. I can't cover everything in one vid but hopefully this makes things a bit clearer for you! I'm currently on tretinoin 0.025% every other night, and in between I'll alternate with a weaker retinoid product or high-strength Vitamin C. I ALWAYS slap SPF50 PA++++ sunscreen on in the day!
If you have favorite retinoid products that you got great results with, do share it with everyone in the comments! If you had a bad experience, do let us know as well so we can all learn.

I ended up jumping in and used the Drunk Elephant 1% and I used it once and my face basically peeled off for a week after and I tried it one more time on top of moisturizer (as like a barrier) and it did the same thing. It was so strong. So now I’m gonna try out .03% from Paula’s Choice. Lol. Maybe one day I’ll be able to use it.

Can retinol helps with the smile lines? how about dark eye circle and dry skin under eyes?

Ms Tan

I wish I had used sunscreen in my teens, was always out in the ☀.

Miss Krys

I was thinking of trying the Paulas choice 1%. Cld I apply it on top of my moisturiser? This will be my first time using Retinoid products and I’m 42.

i just saw an AD for this product lol looking like a bronzed goddess!!!

Shelley N

Pretty sure it is called perioral dermatitis. Its a common rash women get around the chin mouth and sometimes near nose. It requires antibiotics. People think it's acne and it isn't.

Criiri 1

I use differin gel too, it works Well with Tea tree oil to treat pimples that need to be gone assp, and jojoba oil as moistrizer

Toni G

Have you tried using benzoyl peroxide on the off nights to keep breakouts at bay?

789raiden

i just bought mine today but won't start using it till after the weekend cuz I'm going camping and will be out in the sun a lot, do you have any tips on how to start using it right now I'm on antibiotics and using salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide morning and night

Kelly Wolfe

I gave you a like ??

Carsen Gilleland

That Ponds moisturizer has mineral oil which is known to break people out. I was shocked when I knew you were using that moisturizer

Please, please, please, watch this video!

https://youtu.be/6q7kS5K_mpo

It's about this website called cosdna.com where if you search a name of a skincare product on that website it well tell you on a scale from 1-5 how likely it is for a product to break you out or irritate your skin and on a scale from 1-10 how safe the product is to use.

My explanation might be confusing so trust me you want to watch the video (its about 5 minutes) it is a LIFE CHANGER!

I actually searched up ponds dry skin cream on the website and it basically says that the product is so bad for your skin and it is highly likely to break you out and cause irritation.

Please let me know if you have watched the video and checked out the website!

Oh! I wanted to thank you for talking about what to do if you have acne in thinner skin areas. It was extremely helpful!

sashajayleen

I know this video is older but I'm experiencing the same bumpy rash on my chin. I didn't get it until I began using Cerave PM moisturizer and hydrating face wash along with the differin. Could it be the Cerave products?

Mrs Gregory

Loved This video! I always love your videos! Left a like. ☺️ x

Please consult a dermatologist if you have any questions or are unsure about anything during your Differin journey! Though I am here to talk about what you’re experiencing, I’m not a professional and simply want to share my experience as well! I like to offer my tips and tricks that I’ve found useful during my Differin journey but we are all different and the products I use may not work for you. The best thing to do is to speak to a dermatologist if you are unsure about anything! ?

Carly

Hey guys! I’m pretty sure I was experiencing dermatitis, as many of you mentioned! I’m almost positive that it was a reaction my skin had to the Differin but thankfully it has gone now! I thought I would mention this in case anyone else was experiencing the same thing!

Kate O'Mara

The small rash on your chin looks like contact dermatitis. Probably a reaction your skin is having to some new product. Possibly the new vitamin c primer from last video?

Ali Lupton

I've gotten the same rash too!! I'm somewhere around week 8 and I got it once before around week 4 but thought it was a reaction to makeup remover wipes. This time I haven't changed or added anything so I'm not sure but I swear I read differin can sometimes cause a rash. Going to research now!

I really enjoy your videos and a different Journey has definitely been real especially when you're doing it to

Angela Chang

I just started differin and have been following your journey as I go through it. I hope I have similar results. Did you have any non-inflamed acne (clogged pores), if so, did the differin help get rid of them? Also, are you moisturizing before you apply the differin?

luli ii

girl u encourage me to continue . I started using differin cream one week ago and I have noticed a lot of change I have lots of redness and The pimples are so red and I am having terrible break out and the funny part that I had natural highlighter on my cheeks ?✌?

Tara Gabriel

if u use it daily instead of every other day it works faster my moderate acne that my doc said will take 3 months to go away went away in 1 week

Mrs Gregory

AMAZING video sweetie! Obviously left a like… ? xx

Kathryn Ann

Thank you for sharing your differin journey! I think I started using differin about a week or two after you, and my results have been very similar to yours. I've battled acne since I was teenager and this is seriously the only thing that's worked well.
