In the 70th episode in our Youtube series Body Piercing Basics, DaVo covers how wearing headgear like Glasses, Helmets, Headphones, EarBuds, Googles, and other items can cause issues with piercings. Including what piercings are more than likely to be affected by each and some hints on avoiding contact.

If you have a question you would like to see covered in a future video, please comment or contact DaVo at [email protected]

Is it safe to do martial arts with a piercing retainer in place?

Krabby Patty

Hiya! I’m Orin and I love your video! I am getting my septum re pierced, eyebrow, and labret pierced all on Saturday! Super stoked! I have already had my septum pierced once but after it healed I took it out for a job interview and when I came home to put it back in, it wouldn’t go in! So I have to go get it redone. Anyway, I started doing some research on my soon to be new additions and came across your channel! I love it! Plus it’s so cool you are in Iowa too! I’m in SE Iowa though. I have a question for you. I want to become a professional body piercer, how do you recommend I start? Should I go around town to the studios and ask? Should I go to a seminar? I’m a little lost on where to start. I’d appreciate your opinion. Thanks. Orin

Flodin 37

I just realised I can't use my swim goggles becouse of my eyebrow piercing and since I use contact lenses daily I need to use the goggles most of the time when swimming and I also love snorkling

Saffire Channing

I AGREE with what you said about disinfecting jewelry. Before I put any of my earrings into my earlobe piercings, I rub alcohol on the post. That's very good, wise advice.

Nathália Isabella

I'd love to have a faux rook, but glasses... hahaha

Siddhesh Surve

Knowledge bank.

Headphones press on the cartilage a lot and even after the healing period it can make the area so tender that the piercing would get swollen, if you wear them all the time then ear piercing wouldn't be a great option

Saffire Channing

Hey DaVo, I hope you're doin' GREAT! Since I only have quadruple(4) pierced earlobes, nothing really interferes with 'em. I wear wigs a lot, which I usually tuck under my wigs but it doesn't bother my lobe piercings.

Saffire Channing

Hello again, DaVo! In response to this video of yours, since I just have earlobe piercings, my piercings don't CLASH with my reading glasses, when I wear 'em. I'm really GLAD about that too. Since I lay on a travel pillow at night, my piercings are RAISED off my pillow so that isn't a PROBLEM for me either. In FACT, the ONLY problem that I occasionally have is finding my 4th earlobe piercings, when I change my earrings. Other than that, I'm OK!!

Darby James

I have tragus in each ear + rook in one ear. Had them for years. Anyone have tips on best earbuds with tragus small hoops? ‘Preciate your blog.

Saffire Channing

What I meant was that I usually tuck my ears under my wigs. I do that because my ears protrude away from my head so tucking my ears under my wigs helps to hide that defect. I ENJOY changing my earlobe piercings on a daily basis. I often get lots of compliments about my variety of earrings.

Nesryn Nyx

@pangeapiercing okay thanks :P

She looks like a female version of Pete Wentz :)

Melissa Bruce

J.C. pulls that coat off well

@XxMaddieMalicexX no Maddie, one would just say "an industrial".....piercing terminology has gotten out of hand, no doubt. Like i said, when they first came out, one would say "an industrial ear project"....

Problematic Donut

Seriously what is the point of Supspension?  It MUST hurt like a bitch!

Everyone giving that girl a hard time for saying "getting my industrial pierced"...while it isn't strictly correct piercing terminology, we try not to be nazis about it. It's like when people say "gauges"- it's entered into the mainstream, like it or not. I'm old enough to remember when if you said you got "an industrial" we would snicker...it technically is an industrial ear project as per Erik Dakota, the dude who came up with the concept. Not being a dick, just trying to give balance :)

i saw some other videos that do the industrial the 2 holes, with the same "tool" and at the same time, is rigth??

It must have pained jc to hear her say she was getting her "industrial" pierced

Shondra Johnson

Has anyone's skin ever torn, or ripped during a suspension?

Would have liked a close-up of before / after, as well as (repeated) explanation of Industrial piercing. Loving the music selections, and the end was cute; could have been left as, "that's all for this week, nothing clever, goodbye "

@BillyKangas All our music is from Adam "a-Bomb" Weiss- super local guy on the bring of blowing up. If I knew his website I'd let you know it fo sho.

@6:11 P Ducats sweet ninja moves

Nesryn Nyx

i love JCs fuzzy coat :) if its not called industrials wouldnt it be called helix piercings? i dont even know the terminology for that...so instead of 'im getting industrials' would it be 'im getting my helix pierced twice in the industrial fashion'? xD so confused.

2:07 giggity

@ClarkFischerFB703 hipster.

Mari Renee

hehe, SECOND COMMENT!!! WHOA! :) thank God for clark fischer.. i wouldve never found you guys :) but now I'm hooked! subbed and everything!

Suspending scares the shit out of me. I'm scared of heights, and of course you're hanging from a couple of hooks in your skin. I admire anyone who has the balls to do that shit.

Why do people say " getting my industrial pierced"? You don't have an industrial, its always confused me.

This is the Tenth episode in a Youtube Series Pros and Cons by a Piercer. DaVo, a Professional Piercer since 1994, covers the advantages and disadvantages or Pros and Cons of Getting an Industrial Piercing. This video is designed for those considering getting this piercing or piercings and includes common issues with the piercing, common advantages of the piercing including the healing process of the piercing. This video is designed as an educational introduction and you should always consult a professional piercer before getting any piercing done. One of the concepts behind this series is to give the average person the ability to have an educated conversation about Lobe Piercings with their piercer.

Jessica Schreiner

I got a vertical one (a few days ago) and it goes through the conch, rook and a high forward helix. But I'm not sure if my ear autonomy is right for it since the rook is bend constantly and under pressure (the bar is already bent). I'm really concerned that it won't ever heal or it'll never stop hurting. :(

I don't know what to do

Sidney Mack

I am a guy. Who wants this piercing, what side do the straight guy's pierced??

do i rinse my industrial piercing with water after i’m done soaking it,cleaning it with saltwater, using spray, etc ?

Jazmin Williams

I got mine done 2 days ago and the initial piercing didn’t hurt or bleed that much. Its been bleeding and gushing all night and is super sore. Don’t wanna take it out but it’s concerning me. It has only been a couple days so idk

Zaniyah Henderson

it hurts like crazy btw off and on?

Camille Thionville

Do you have links to products you recommend (the soaps you mentioned snd whatnot)? And how do you go about with compresses?

I've had my industrial almost 2 months and she still has large bumps I'm struggling to bring down

Douglas Griffiths

DaVo, what are your thoughts on getting an indy as 2 separate piercings to be joined once healed? I've been thinking about getting one pierced that way. (Jan Griffiths).

orkida G

My ears are a bit small so I don't know if this is the right piercing for me,also when can you shower after getting it and should I clean it with salt water and a cotton ball?

do you always have to leave it in?

Thank you for amazing video. I just got my industrial done 3 days ago :D and i love it so much. I wear glasses and i think the placement is perfect (based on information from these kinds of videos, and the looks of it). So far it is looking great, minimal swelling, no blood or discharge, only a tiny bit red ( but that might be the sun as well)

Ladonna Smith

Is the industrial as difficult to heal as the daith is? I find my daith gets angry for no reason and ive had it for 9 months.

Lillie Renee

My ear rejected this piercing twice, but I want it so badly. I didn't realize until this video that my ear anatomy is not ideal.

Madysen Mc

So I have been looking forward to getting this piercing for a while but like you said it needs to be isolated and I ride horses at least once a week and of course wearing a helmet so now I’m not really sure what to do about the piercing and helmet situation.

Vixen Mitchell

I just got both of my ears pierced with the industrial piercing within a week of each other and got my daith pierced too a few days later

all_ bluevioletbliss

I wanted an industrial piercing so bad but both piercers at the shop I went to, said no. I'm told that (as you said) the anatomy of my ear doesn't allow for it. I actually only have half of the flap that most people have. It's just the way I was born. I was disappointed but I was able to get a daith and a flat andI LOVE them. It was a great compromise. I've had them almost a week noe and I've been diligent with aftercare and they're not even terribly sore now. My next piercings will be a tragus and a helix. I can't wait!
Thanks for all of your information!

Julia Emma

Fuck it in October im just gonna take a trip to Iowa to be pierced by you.. It's settled

I have my one industrial done, I actually wanted to get a matching one on the other side but I'm on the fence about it

What about wearing masks like we do now? I had to change out the bar to two horseshoe piercings to tame the pain. But idk if that hinders the healing process

Zaniyah Henderson

also it hurts when i do little things like yawn and sometimes chew. it’s really irritating because i don’t know what i’m doing wrong?

Laura Dias Fagundes

I've had my industrial for i belieeeve 2 to 3 years (i honestly cant remember) and while i love it to bits it was the most painful experience of my life. I screamed so loud the whole studio came to see, my dad and one of the tattoo artists had to hold my legs and arms down. I was screaming BLOODY MURDER on that damn chair. I was really embarassed but it was such a primal pain i could literaly not control myself (probably didnt help that it was my first piercing ever).
The first hole hurt a lot but the second one felt like being punished by god by my hubris, to this day ive never felt a pain like that. But i've also had many friends who had a totaly ok time! So its rly a personal thing. This bitch of a piercing took SO long to heal and i believe it STILL hasnt fully healed. If i accidentaly sleep on it it gets irritated (particularly on the upper hole). It is beautiful and i love it but damn is it a lot of trouble. This somewhat traumatic experience is the only thing keeping me from getting nipple piercings, i cant imagine going through that kind of pain and healing on such a sensitive place.

I got mine done 3 days ago , healing good , swelling going down fast and everything. I’m using sea salt soak and tea tree oil if I get any keloids.

Heyy, I’m thinking of getting an industrial piercing but I’m scared that I don’t have the right anatomy for that, is there a way that I can send you a photo?

have had my industrial in for 11 years, everything in this video is true. it's one of my favorite piercings, but the initial healing process sucks. there's times where I'd forget it was there, but I'd know it the next day after sleeping on it and it'd be too sore to touch and red, thankfully it doesn't do that anymore

F4RR3LL Family Vlogs

I had mine in for 4 days and I got bad allergic reaction to the metal, so I took it out. I really liked it but it was super painful for 4 days. I dont think I'll ever get it re pierced because I love sleeping on my side.

Wish you were my grandpa smh

Can you get an industrial piercing if you have glasses? Thanks

Nabil Rabia

I can't imagine my commute without headphones...what about a small earbud going in the ear canal ?

I've had mine for i wanna say almost 10 years and MAN i love it! The experience i had was great, but my body's reaction was so weird! I got the hot sweats and had to take my shirt off [luckily, my piercer was a woman and was like 'do what you need to]. Definitely the most painful but it looks so badass. I love it even today!

I wanted one for like ten years, but I honestly do not have the anatomy for a traditional industrial, and they seem like everyone and their grandma has them anyway.
What I can get is a rook to anti-tragus ????

Lily Jones

i’m planning on getting the piercing in september for my birthday, and as i’m still in school (uk) they are quite strict on piercings, if they tell me to put a plaster on it during sports is that safe?

HyunjinsLongBlondeLocks -_-

Why do I watch these scary videos when I'm getting an industrial peircing next week ? I like the pros of it... But the cons scare the shit out of me. The pros he said were nice though ?.

Sumaiya Khan

I got mine almost 3 weeks ago! i had no pain what so ever. Pretty sure i dont have too much cartilage in that area. So far healing is going good almost looks like ive had it for years. only swells when i have to move it for cleaning and goes down about a few mins after. I wear the Hijab so I actually keep it loose and clean it immediately after I come home from work. I clean it 2 to 3 times a day. Dont sleep on it since im already used to sleeping on my right ear more. Hoping it heals within 4 months!

some tattoo artists and piercers have a really intimidating personality but not you sir. I feel like you would totally put me at ease and make me so calm during my piercing.

everyone says just sleep on the other side... i move in my sleep? i don’t realize if i change sides

Esmee Harvey

hey! i absolutely love your channel and hopefully getting my industrial done on the 19th. because of my ear anatomy i’m getting a 90° angle industrial and just wondering if this is any different to the straight barbell?
i hope it doesn’t get in the way of my mask ?

I just got mine done today, I didn't feel any pain at all.... the problem is I bump my head on my shoulder and it moved so its pain but I know I shouldn't move it so I'm worried ????

morgan storm

so i just got my industrial pierced about 3 days ago (on saturday it’s currently tuesday) is it normal for my ear to swell up and have dry blood? also is throbbing and heat normal on the ear as well

C 5quared

just had my wife do my lobe with an 18ga needle, using only sterile surgical materials, feels like it's completely healed within a week. considering Indust now (by a PRO). but im wondering why is it 14ga? is the bar actually 14? or thinner, thus allowing for some misalignment? or should i start with a single helix to try? ive read the fossa is about the same pain as helix. true? thanks for your engagement, i find your comments to be a good companion to the video

Khyy D

Any Advice on avoiding keloids or any affections ?

Ana María Rodríguez

Wow, I just enjoy your explanations so much! It's really nice to hear you! I can tell you really love what you do. Had an industrial piercing done about two years ago. It's still the most painful one I've gotten so far haha, but I don't regret it at all, and it healed nicely.

khadija Pickett

My industrial didn’t hurt when I got it pierced but the healing process suckedddddd and it took two years to completely heal but now it’s my favorite piercing and it doesn’t even bother me one bit

Abi Louise

I finally got mine done ! It's really swollen but it's worth it ✌?

De’Miia Wiles

Does this piercing lift your ear? Like if one of your ears fold over a little more than the other would it lift it up?

Awesome. Got mine done about a month ago and was unable to get it done the way I originally envisioned it. My piercer told me the same thing about my ear anatomy not being able to healing correctly with the style I wanted. She adjusted the placement and I love the new look. It’s healing as expected. It’s a relief to know she’s doing things the right way. Loving your content.

THE vamp. Diaries

If u use a travel pillow and put your ear in the hole, you can sleep on ur side. Your welcome ?

Lea Avelle

Is the industrial piercing harder to heal than an upper cartilage piercing in your opinion? I‘m asking because I would like to get an industrial piercing in the future and already have an upper cartilage piercing that I got to completely heal even though I swim every week and only had about three weeks immediately after getting it pierced that I didn't swim. I know you said that you shouldn't swim with it for a lot longer, but more than 3-6 weeks is impossible for me. So do you think the healing process would be similar to my upper cartilage one, or quite different?
Love your videos by the way, greetings from Germany!

Tre Puckett

I’m scared that i might not have the right ear shape, hopefully if not they can just bend it, cause i really love the look of this piercing

erin beale

Actually it takes one year to heal do your research.

Mister Momo

8:50 I hear using a travel
Pillow to sleep on whilst having the ear in between the hole is effective

Hieronymus Bowen

In watching this a few hours after I got mine done. Love it ?

Brandie Ceasar

I love how mine looks but I miss sleeping on that side of my body... it’s been 3 years and now I’m considering just adding jewelry and separating them

Opal Fuzion

lmao just got mine done an hour before my first slipknot show today ????

Marie xx

hi there☺️ first of all, lots of love from france your work is amazing!!
I've been thinking about getting this piercing for a while and I think I'm finally gonna do it, I've got really long hair tho and I was wondering if it would be an issue (I always completely isolate my piercings and keep my hair up a least for the 3-4 first days but I don't know if that'll do it for this one) what do u think about it?

Ana's Lover

I already have an industrial for 5 days, but I go swimming twice a week (not right now because of corona) but I start again at July the first! Do you have any tips? I clean it extremely well and I am really carefull with it!

Blake Collins

So this might sound dumb but I just got my industrial done by my best friend in her bathroom yesterday in inner ear is not flat in spot I wanted it so sje moved ti to a spot where it was flat and it fits really good from what I know but is it common for it to hurt and burn nonstop even after like 4 hours after it was done ?

Alexis Corriveau

I am14 and and my industrial pierced in June and the person did it wrong, on the wrong part of my ear. And my ear was rejecting it so I am getting it re-done

Elga 5ko

Looks like I wont be getting an industrial piercing until the world is back to normal

christina gyda

i want mine done but i play competitive soccer and high school soccer so i can’t because of healing :(

Batty Artistry

Do you know anything about the trident pericing and if you can wear the earbuds

Kaylee Grifin

Do you have an Instagram? I have a few questions about my industrial piercing!

nolox 1033

How can I wear hat with an industrial since I have to wear it for work

Andreea Dobre

When I got all my other piercings 6-7 years ago, this one was the one that got away. Prescription glasses, earbuds, lots of things I do to my hair on a regular basis, long history of trouble with my earlobe piercings so that I can't wear regular earrings at all, it just screamed NO. But seeing how well all the others turned out after all this time when healed with patience and proper care... Now I'm thinking about it again, of all times in the age of face masks. Oh lordy.

i love mine !! ive had it for a couple of months but i have a couple of irration bumps because i have really long curly hair and it used to get caught on it alot but they are pretty much gone now

Kynoah Cole

So I really want to get this piercing, but I kind of move around a lot in my sleep, so if I fall asleep on the opposite side that I get the piercing, do you think that may help?

Mk Rainbow

thank you for this! i have been wanting an industrial for two years now and i’m finally getting it done as a birthday present tomorrow

Alex Ramos

I got my industrial pierced 8 months ago and it was mostly healed so I had the bar changed and the new bar has a snake accessory in it. After I got it changed it became red and angry, the snake accessory makes it a tight fit and actually blocks both the upper and lower piercing so it is hard to clean it, and it hurts to move. I've been cleaning it with saline soaks and icing it. Should I take it out to change it back to the longer bar I was pierced with or wait for it to calm down and heal before changing again?

lndap 10

If i got this type of piercing am i gonna be able to do sports? (Softball, volleyball, basketball and weights) i'm thinking that maybe the helmet is going to be a problem, but what about sweat? Because i do some kind of exercise 6 days a week ?

Beverly Krahn

Hello again! I got my tragus and industrial on one side done 4 days ago. While the tragus has given my virtual no problems (yet), the industrial is red, swollen and tender which I expected but I have some redness and tenderness at my temple and soreness behind my ear. Is that normal?

Mikayla Johnson

I’ve been wanting to get a industrial piercing, and am ready to take care of it. I’m just worried that who ever is doing my piercing does it wrong.

Sameerah Dowd

How do I know if I have the right shape for this piercing?

Abi Louise

I'm not allowed this piercing in for school, would it be okay if I do have my hair down during school be then clean it in the morning ,when I get home and before I go to sleep ?

MissX Legion

Is it okay to swim in the ocean after a week ?? . .

What should I do when I have to wear a hat for work and with now wearing a mask? I plan on getting it in a week for my birthday and I'm worried about that.

Ellie Quinn

I pierced mine a few days ago and had it taken out today cause it rejected :(

Imogen Roberts

I'm getting mine done tomorrow! I'm nervous because I only have my lobes and a nostril done but I'm super excited

Caite Smith

3 to 4 months to heal BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

faith koh

hi , how would y’all rate this piercing in comparison to a normal helix ? i’ve been watching videos and people are saying that the aftercare is the harder part and i think i can deal with that as i alrdy have a helix but what about the pain ? (in comparison to a helix)

Leilani Cruz

Question. How will you know when its healed since i plan to get one soon

Abi Louise

I'm getting mine done next week, would it effect the piercing if I have my hair down?

Erica V

ive had mine pierced 2017 its my favorite! I had a choice left or right. I picked left because I don't sleep on that side. If you get this done baby it clean it and it will heal!?

It’s Tae

so then why do so many people say it takes a year to heal ?

rebecca xx

i got an industrial, but instead of the long bar i use two small ones. The long bar made it harder to heal.

Hey! Love the video, i just have one question : is wearing glasses a problem? Bc without them i can't see so i was wondering if this is a problem... wanting to get it done next saturday ?

Breezy Forever

Hey I’ve had my industrial piercing for about 3-4 years now but one of the holes got smaller because i took it out and didn’t put a barbell in for a long time, do you think I should get it re pierced or just force the bar in myself?

Max Anna

hey, im thirteen (turning 14 in 4 days) and i would love to get an industrial piercing. however, i have glasses and i dont want them to cause any sort of interference with the healing or anything. Also, what do i clean it with? i've heard say saline wound wash (which i own) and others promote their own products. should i get it, wait to get it, or never get it? (also my ears should be in the right shape, but idk if that'll change over time? how does that work?) sorry if i sound stupid lol, just trying to make sure i do this right.

laura youngblood

I want this piercing, but I don’t think it would be worth such a long healing time

Zaniyah Henderson

i got my done on saturday and my ear is hard feeling. i dont know what that means but i’m super scared i’m going to get an infection. i also clean it with sea salt and water

Grace L

Dude I gasped when you said Des Moines, Iowa! I live out here and never heard of you guys, I got my industrial done 3 days ago and wish I would’ve gone to you!!!!

Lanazja Taylor

I know im really late to the video I have been looking into getting this piercing the past week or so. I have a flat inside of my ear. I have heard it hurts. Im currently 13 what is the age minimum for this piercing? And would you recommend i get it? I’m responsible i think i can do it ?

Rin Sanchez

Im on day 4 and I’m only using Ethyl Alcohol to take care of it is that ok?

My sister is 13 and wants to get this piercing, is she an ok age for it or will it grow out almost immediately?

I haven't wore a earring in my industrial piercing for about a year, and the holes shrunk. The holes are still open cause I can put a regular earring in each of the holes but my barbell will not go in. Should I try to get a smaller gauged barbell or can I get the holes pierced again at the shop?

any tips for getting rid of irritation bumps, or is it just a waiting game? my industrial is 2 months old now and has been healing super smoothly, but around a month in i knocked something off a shelf and it clipped my pierced ear, which whilst it didn't bleed or anything i woke up the next morning to a little bump on by the fistula on the back of my ear which hasn't improved. generally it's been super chill and non-problematic, but i've not suffered piercing bumps on any of my piercings before and i can't follow the common advice of 'add a drop of tea tree oil to your sea salt solution' because i'm mildly allergic to it :(

great video and channel btw! love the way you deliver information, friendly but concise, had to hit that subscribe button. :) i'm an ocean away so getting pierced by you is borderline impossible but at least great info is international, haha :')

i got my mine almost 2-3 months ago and my bottom is healing pretty good but my top is really bad and infected and tbh i tried everything, sea salt , tea tree oil , aspirin and its still infected and has a little bubble honestly idk what to do my Piercer just tells me to take more care of it i think im going pretty good at that so idk what im doing wrong I NEED HELP the only wrong thing that i admit doing is sleeping on it

I got the industrial done yesterday. The piercer told me to use bactine for 10 days then to let it do it’s own thing. Is bactine okay for piercings (I’m gonna keep cleaning it past 10 days with other things.)

The anatomy part was a new concept to me. I went to my piercer wanting to get a double industrial but was surprised when she told me my ears weren't the right shape for 2 industrials. Luckily I had just enough space/shape to get one right at the very top at a slight angle, but I'm still bummed my ears won't support 2 industrials lol

love hoya

i’m 16 and i really wanna get one but i’m scared because everyone says that it hurts really bad and infects easily. i got my helix pierced and it didn’t really hurt and getting my lobes pierced with a gun hurt more. does anyone have any tipps or any experience with an industrial?
